first: sorry for the bad photography. i had to make up a name and a design a label for a wine. i decided to call mine "smashed." why? well, you get smashed when you drink it. also, grapes are "smashed" i like how this turned out. it was actually fun to make. gasp!

this is a logo i made for a blood drive that goes drives around to different texas schools to get donations. i had to make up a name for the 2008 drive, so i went with "the gift of a lifetime." my first version of this was very flat so i made the present a cube to make it more interesting. the bow made of blood drops was the hardest thing to do and although it's much better than my first versions, i'm still not completely happy with it...

this is a logo i made for a made up flower shop called green thumbs. i traced my hand with black paint and used a stick instead of a paint brush to get the texture. That was part of the assignment. I repeated the hand to make a flower shape and it worked out great. I ended up taking some of the texture from the hands and putting it in the font so the image and the name could be tied together.

this is another flyer for goodbye blue mondays. i made it because i was really bored at my internship today. that little guy isn't a stack of post its...he is a day by day calendar....dancing his blues away. i like the simplicity and the color of it. yep. i think i might print this as a poster since i designed it at 8.5 x 11 this time.

the project that is due tomorrow is for a children's zoo. my partner and i decided to call the zoo Zooquest. the theme of the zoo was adventure. i'm kind of glad that project is over, but i think we did a really good job. there is wayyyy too much stuff that we did to post on here, so i just chose my the two favorite things. i made the zebra, tiger, and giraffe for some interactive screens that we were going to have all around the park and the logo is below those animals. it's supposed to resemble writing that explorers might come across in a cave or something while on a quest.

it's 2: 47am. i did it again. i got bored and started playing in illustrator. my awesome friend kristina has a street style blog called the rebel waltz, so i thought i'd make something for her. when i thought of making kristina into a toon, i automatically knew that she would have her heart shaped glasses and her signature bun and bangs. she rocks those things like no one else. i'm hoping she likes this.

the first assignment of print 3: design the new simd poster. simd = school of interactive media and design. that is the school i go to at the university of the incarnate word. the poster that they currently have sucks...a lot. i noticed that they had been choosing designs that were photo heavy, so i decided to stay away from photography and went in a completely graphic direction. this is a completely different style than what i usually do, but i wanted to do something different and something that would grab the attention of high school students, since that is the target audience. it was fun working on this. i'm positive my design won't be chosen, but i'm alright with that. there are three people who really deserve to win. i hope one of them are chosen. i turned this in yesterday, but there are still quite a few things that need tweaking (mostly on the back of the poster). i am diggin' it though...

these two posters were done for my history of communication arts class. we had to take a project that we had done in another class and recreate it in two different styles that were done in the past. i chose to re-do the ad i did in my concepting class. i was really disappointed with how it came out, so i thought i'd try it again. the first one was based off of a poster that paul rand made. to be honest, i chose to base it off of that poster because it was the easiest style i could find, but i do like how it turned out. i think the piece came out looking...cute, i guess. the other poster was based off of a poster that was done in an american modernism style, which is another very simple style. i like the colors i used in it, but what i really love is that damn dog. it's too adorable. click on the ads to see them at a bigger scale.

this is the word mark i made for umbrella magazine. it's a new kick ass web zine that everyone is going to love. the editor of this zine asked me to add the "written by the people for the people" on the page somewhere, so i just made it go with the word mark. oh, and i designed the site for them as well. i will post a link to it when they start putting up articles.

sorry for the glare.

i had to choose a fake restaurant and make a logo and menu for it. i chose becker avenue grill and this is what i got. i came up with this style in a few hours. it all started with the logo. my first attempt at the logo was terrible, so i had to think of something really quick. after getting the logo, i made the menu in the same style. i like the style, mainly because it looks interesting and is easy to do.

the production part of the project is what almost killed me. originally i was going to print the two page spreads of the inside of the menu on one page and fold it, but that didn't work too well due to the thickness of the glossy paper i used. i then ended up getting blood on that original concept for the menu on accident. (story: i accidentally cut myself with my exacto knife while cutting the pages and didn't realize it until i touched the menu and saw my blood on it. it was a traumatizing experience) when that ended up being hell, i decided to just have the menu bound. it looks okay, but i really wish i could have gotten a white bind instead of the black one that i got. sucky kinko's only had black, though. this is boring you and myself, so i will end this here.

this was my first packaging project ever. home front is a brand that makes small or home office supplies. this is what i did for its packaging. i wanted to involve a pattern of some sort and i wanted some unique boxes, so i made them, yes, made them...out of plastic. it was hell, but worth it. i like how it turned out. oh, and i'm not sure if it is noticeable in the photographs, but the logo is made to look like a stamp. click on the photos to see them at a larger size.

a few entries back, i posted a site design that i did for mike wieringo. i had to do revisions to the layout. i took all of the things that the professor told me to do during the critique into consideration when i revised the site. this is what i got. it looks a ton better...mostly because i actually scanned in real news print paper and got a better font for the title of the paper. i also added a few things like a coffee ring and red markings.

i just finished this around 32 seconds ago. it's another iron design challenge that i took more than an hour on. the assignment was to create a site for your favorite television show. i originally wanted to do flight of the conchords or arrested development, but i'm way to attached to those shows and i actually care about how i portray them. i just started getting into a show called dexter, so i decided to do it on that show. i find that it's easier to design serious things because not everyone thinks what you think is funny...is funny. make sense? this is the second revision of the site. i like it so far. i'm thinking that the cast area with the polaroids will be flash.

first, i'd like to say, the heading does not say "penis." i know it looks like that, but it says "pencils." that was the one bad thing about this. i love the photographs and i like the writing on the index card, but i really do need to redraw the heading and make it darker so you can see every single letter clearly. when this was shown in class on the very big projector screen the whole class laughed for around five minutes...i'm not exaggerating. so, if you haven't guessed, the site is about pencils.

this logo was done for print 1. it was, how do i say this...the project from hell. it took us such a long time to do this project because my teacher didn't want anything that was too predictable.

the company: stirrings. their product: flavored coffee stirrers.

my concept for this logo: i thought about coffee houses and what people do in them. one major thing that people do is just talk. so, i thought of "stirring up conversation." i made a coffee cup with steam. the steam creates two people facing each other. i know this still has a long way to go, but it's a good concept...i think.

this is something that i made in my typography class. the assignment was to choose a word and illustrate it so that even if someone who couldn't read english saw it, they would know what it meant. my professor wanted me to give her a copy of this on a disc so she could put it on the gallery, but i was, and still am, very lazy...so that never happened. i wish i would have gotten off my ass and taken five minutes to burn it onto a disc.

today i saw a girl on campus with an extremely bright and tacky shirt. the stripes on it were horribly loud. i made a mental note as she walked by.

when i got home, i opened illustrator to play. this is what i made. no story to it. it's a wysiwyg. what you see is what you get: rectangles. these are the colors of the stripes that were on the girls icky shirt.

i took a picture of my legs the other day when i was trying on my new pair of shorts. yes, i am one of those girls who likes to try on her new clothes when she gets home resulting in a mini fashion show.

back to the picture: my teachers always tell us to just say no! to filters in photoshop, but i've seen some pretty cool things done with them, so I started playing around with the picture of my legs and this is what i got. someday i will do this the right way in illustrator.

this is a flash site that i am making for my web class. my assignment was to design a site that was about my assigned designer, milton glaser. glaser is known for his famous bob dylan poster and probably one of the most popular logos, the i heart ny logo. i had to base my site design on one of glaser's pieces, but i didn't want to do the two obvious choices. i wanted to call attention to some of the other designs that he has made that haven't gotten as much attention, so i chose to base this design off of his saratoga poster. this is the first draft of my design. all of the content is going to go in the biggest circle and i will be moving the navigation into the circles that are on the left of that. after speaking with my teacher, i've noticed some things that need to be fixed and he would like me to make glaser, the man in the design, a black silhouette with colorful hair like the dylan poster that i did not want to address at all. i'm not too happy about that, but as an aspiring graphic designer, i have to learn to please the client, yes? yes. i will post the final design and a link to the site when i finish. i'm hoping for this to turn out nicely.

i'm jenn. i like to type in lower case letters. do you know why they are called "lower case letters?"

let me tell you a story:

back in the day, before the wonderful worlds of typewriters and computers, there was a thing called mechanical printing. this is the process type setters would use to create words, sentences, and paragraphs that were to be pressed into paper to create things such as newspapers and books. to do this, they would combine wooden or metal blocks that had one letter each. Those letters, being both uppercase and lowercase, were kept in a case, one being above the other. can you guess which part of the case each were stored? the upper case letters were kept in the top drawer (the upper case) and the lower case letters were kept in the bottom drawer (the lower case).

i'm jenn, i'm a graphic design student, and i find things that most people would find boring to be terribly interesting.
